Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (HIRTA) has been a community staple in Central Iowa since 1981. The rural transit agency provides public transportation to seven counties including Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story and Warren counties, and provides hundreds of thousands of rides for residents of Central Iowa annually. These trips help support independence and improve quality of life for citizens representing a range of demographics. From preschoolers to Iowa’s senior population, HIRTA is there to help.

Community involvement and innovative partnerships are building blocks of HIRTA’s culture as an agency. Employment Transportation Programs, Health Initiatives, and Community Task Forces are familiar strategies that HIRTA is proud to be involved in. The transit agency is happy to partner with the City of Newton to assess the need of, and to pilot new programs. Recently, HIRTA introduced HIRTA NOW in Newton. The service provides residents with same day transportation on weekdays between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. One way that HIRTA determines the need for new programs in communities throughout the region is through community surveys. The transit agency is currently conducting one such survey in the city of Newton to determine the possibility of implementing a fixed route transportation system.

Citizens can find the survey online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/TX2LZKD. The survey is also available in paper form. If you would like to learn more about HIRTA’s services, or for a paper copy of the Community Survey, please contact the customer service line at 1-877-686-0029, or email erides@ridehirta.com.
