The success of three retailers in downtown Newton has opened up new opportunities for growth and expansion.

  • Relics, a popular destination for antiques, collectibles and “shtuff”, moved from the west side of the square to a much larger 1st Avenue storefront.
  • Burrito Torpedo opened their location on the southwest corner of the square and offer delicious, handmade burritos!
  • Silverado Jewelry made the move to a larger west side location due to a growing demand for quality handmade jewelry.

A significant side benefit of new growth and expansion is the availability of right-sized locations for retailers seeking the right spaces.

Sporting goods aficionados were thrilled to learn that Hibbett Sports – with over 1,000 stores nationwide – chose Newton for their newest location. Hibbett partnered with Family Video and is busy remodeling two-thirds of the store located at 308 1st Ave E. Family Video will be located in one-third of the building and will continue providing community members with rental DVD’s, Blu-Rays and video games from their new digs.

Other areas of Newton are ripe for commercial development as well, including the 1st Avenue East corridor and the land surrounding the Exit 168/Iowa Speedway area. With the City Council’s approval of a proposal to develop a master plan for the area, the City’s Economic Development staff and the Newton Development Corporation will be working closely with RDG Planning & Design to craft a compelling land use plan for prospective developers.

All totaled, there’s good reason to be optimistic about the future of retail here in Newton!
